Student Scholarships

The Visalia Education Foundation awards about $50,000 in scholarships to Visalia Unified School District high school seniors each year. Over 135 applications were received from the 2018  seniors.

The following scholarships are currently available for the 2019 year:

1.   Annie Mitchell Memorial Scholarship: 1 @ $2,000:  Financial needs will not be a determining factor. This student must have a 3.5 or better grade point average and be continuing their studies in the area of education or history. Student receiving scholarship must be enrolled in college full time. 

2. Chan Asian-American Scholarship:  1 @ $250:  For a student of Asian/American descent, strong academics and contribution to school or community.  Student must have a 3.0 grade point average or better. 
3. Evelyn M. Alexander Memorial Scholarship: 1 @ $7,500: This scholarship is for a Redwood High School student based on financial need.  Recipient must have been accepted to a four-year college or university and must have achieved a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.  Extra-curricular activities will be reviewed.
4. Frances Cutler Memorial Scholarship:  1 @ $2,000:  Financial need will not be a determining factor. This student must have a 3.5 or better grade point average. Student receiving scholarship must be enrolled in college full time. 
5. Marguerite R. Sheklian Memorial Scholarship: 1 @ $500: This scholarship is in honor of former Visalia Unified teacher and assistant principal Marguerite Sheklian. The scholarship is for a student with at least a 3.5 GPA who is pursuing a career in education and has been active in school, religious and community activities.
6. Visalia Education Foundation Alternative Education Scholarship: 2 @ $500: This scholarship is for an accomplished student enrolled in a Visalia Unified School District Alternative Education program and who has been active in community service. Grade point average must be at least a 3.2.  7.  Visalia Education Foundation Community Scholarship: 5 @ $250:  One scholarship will be awarded to each High School for an outstanding and deserving student.  Student must have a 3.0 grade point average or better.
8.  Visalia Education Foundation Scholarship: 8 @ $1000:   For students who have been involved in performing or visual arts most of their high school years. Your letter of recommendation should come from a teacher in the arts. Grade point average must be at least a 3.5. Two scholarships will be awarded to each of the four high schools.
9.  Visalia Women’s Civic Club: 2 @ $500:  This student must have a 3.0 or better GPA.  Students pursuing certificates of completion in a program, i.e. fire, police, medical. EMT from an accredited school will be considered. 
10.  Jean (Sortor) Winkler Memorial Scholarship: 2 @ $1000: This scholarship is in honor of former Visalia Unified teacher Jean (Sortor) Winkler. The scholarship is intended for a student with at least a 3.5 GPA who has been actively participating in VUSD music programs and whose goal is to become a teacher.
11. * Cal Rossi Memorial Scholarship:1 @ $3,000: This scholarship is for a Mt. Whitney student with a 3.0 GPA. Student must show activity in interscholastic athletics and be enrolled in an U.S. college full-time. Application/Essay must contain personal background, financial need, work experience/community service and anticipated goals of college study.   
12.  *Dani Blain Real Estate Team Scholarship: 5@ $500:One scholarship will be made available for a student at each of the four comprehensive high schools and for an alternative education student. Students should demonstrate strong morals, show a strong work ethic and maintain a 3.0 or better GPA. Financial need will be taken into account.
13.  *Fallen Memorial Fund Scholarship – Marine Cpl Jared C Verbeek: 1 @ $1000: For a Mt. Whitney student who is related to a military service member going back as far as three generations (parent, grand parent and great-grandparent). Requires minimum3.0 GPA, proof of 5 hours of Veteran Volunteer work, copy of family member’s DD214 and an explanation of what patriotism means to you. Essay is reviewed by committee so please do not use names of family members in essay.
14.  *Fallen Memorial Fund Scholarship – Petty Officer First Class (SEAL) Thomas Retzer: 1 @ $1000: For a Mt. Whitney student who is related to a military service member going back as far as three generations (parent, grand parent and great-grandparent). Requires minimum3.0 GPA, proof of 5 hours of Veteran Volunteer work, copy of family member’s DD214 and an explanation of what patriotism means to you. Essay is reviewed by committee so please do not use names of family members in essay. 
15.  *Fallen Memorial Fund Scholarship – Army Sgt. Tyler Vaughan: 1 @ $1000: For an El Diamante student who is related to a military service member going back as far as three generations (parent, grand parent and great-grandparent). Requires minimum3.0 GPA, proof of 5 hours of Veteran Volunteer work, copy of family member’s DD214 and an explanation of what patriotism means to you. Essay is reviewed by committee so please do not use names of family members in essay. 
16. *Fallen Memorial Fund Scholarship – Army PFC Keith M. Williams: 1 @ $1000: For an El Diamante student who is related to a military service member going back as far as three generations (parent, grand parent and great-grandparent). Requires minimum3.0 GPA, proof of 5 hours of Veteran Volunteer work, copy of family member’s DD214 and an explanation of what patriotism means to you. Essay is reviewed by committee so please do not use names of family members in essay.
17. * Hurley PTA Scholarship: 2 @ $500: For a graduating senior who attended Hurley Elementary for at least 4 full years. Must have a minimum 3.5 GPA and be enrolled in an accredited 2 or 4 year college for the upcoming Fall semester. Application/essay should incorporate Hurley Elementary background, PTA involvement, extra-curricular/community involvement and goals in college.  Financial need is not a factor.
18.  *Jack in the Box Community Involvement Scholarship: 4 @ $1000: One student with financial need (family income less than $50,000 a year) from Redwood, El Diamante, Golden West and Mt. Whitney. GPA 3.5 or higher. Must be enrolled in a four-year college full time for Fall 2019. Essay must include financial need, work experience/community service and college goals. Two letters of recommendation are required for this scholarship.
19. *Julie Reed Memorial Scholarship:  2 @ $250:  This Memorial Scholarship is in honor of past Willow Glen PTA President, Julie Reed. The scholarship is geared toward a student who attended Willow Glen between grades 4 to 6.  The student must have a 3.0 GPA or better, involved in various community service programs and active in student body activities.
20. *Ken Harris Memorial Scholarship: 1 @ $1,000: Ken Harris was a sixth grade teacher at Mountain View School for over 30 years. This scholarship is for a Mt. Whitney High School student with a 3.0 GPA or greater who will be attending an accredited college or vocational program. Need will be considered.
21. *Kenneth Oliphant Tennis Scholarship: 2 @ $250: For a student who has played 2 or more years of Varsity tennis at Mt. Whitney HS. The student must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and be enrolled in a 2 or 4-year college in Fall 2019. The applicant essay must include how playing tennis impacted his/her life and how it will play a role in the future
22. *Laudine Oliphant Visual Arts Scholarship: 1 @ $250: For a Mt. Whitney student who has taken visual arts (painting) at least two years and has a 3.0 GPA or better. Student must be enrolled in a 2 or 4-year college for Fall 2019 and plan to continue study in visual arts. The applicant essay must include how painting has impacted his/her life and how it will play a role in the future.
23. *Line Family Scholarship: 1 @ $1000: One scholarship will be awarded to an accomplished, deserving Mt. Whitney student.  Not limited to a student with financial need.  The Line Family will review these applications.  Student must have a 3.5 grade point average or better.
24. *Oak Grove PTA Scholarship: 2 @ $500: For a graduating senior who attended Oak Grove Elementary for at least 4 full years. Must have a minimum 3.5 GPA and be enrolled in an accredited 2 or 4 year college for the upcoming Fall semester. Application/essay should incorporate extracurricular/community involvement and goals in college.  Financial need is not a factor.
25. *PEO Chapter HF Scholarship: 1 @ $1600: PEO is an international philanthropic education organization for women. The local chapter HF is offering this scholarship. The recipient must be a female graduate of a Visalia high school with a minimum of a 3.0 GPA. The scholarship is not based on financial need. Chapter members will review these applications.
26. *Rhonda A. Barker Memorial Scholarship: 1 @ $500: For an accomplished student who has been active in community service who has a 3.5 or better GPA. The student must be attending college full time in the fall of 2019. 
 
 * Scholarships may be reviewed by the donating family or chapter.
