Visalia Education Foundation
The Visalia Education Foundation awards over $50,000 in scholarships to Visalia Unified School District high school seniors each year. Over 135 applications were received from the 2018 seniors. Information for Seniors on scholarships for 2019 will be available by January 15, 2019. New scholarships are accepted from the community each year before October 1.
The following scholarships were available for the 2018 year:
1. Chan Asian-American Scholarship: 1 @ $250
For a student of Asian/American descent, strong academics and contribution to school or community. Student must have a 3.0 grade point average or better.
2. Community Scholarship: 5 @ $250
One scholarship will be awarded to each High School for an outstanding and deserving student. Student must have a 3.0 grade point average or better.
3. Frances Cutler Memorial Scholarship: 1 @ $2,000
Financial need will not be a determining factor. This student must have a 3.5 or better grade point average. Student receiving scholarship must be enrolled in college full time.
4. Edith K. Alkema Memorial Scholarship: 1 & $10,000
For a student currently living in the Ivanhoe area and a Senior attending VUSD. The student must have a 3.0 GPA. Financial need will be a determining factor. Student may be pursuing a degree or a certificate of completion from an accredited school.
5. Tanner Berbereia Memorial Scholarship: 1 @ $600
For students with a grade point average of 3.5 or above who will be attending a four year university. Involvement in extracurricular activities: sports, the arts, student government, etc.
6. Annie Mitchell Memorial Scholarship: 1 @ $2,000
Financial needs will not be a determining factor. This student must have a 3.5 or better grade point average and be continuing their studies in the area of education or history. Student receiving scholarship must be enrolled in college full time.
7. Visalia Education Foundation Scholarship: 8 @ $1000
For students who have been involved in performing or visual arts most of their high school years. Your letter of recommendation should come from a teacher in the arts. Grade point average must be at least a 3.5. One scholarship will be awarded to each of the four high schools.
8. Visalia Women’s Civic Club: 2 @ $500
This student must have a 3.0 or better GPA. Students pursuing certificates of completion in a program, i.e. fire, police, medical. EMT from an accredited school will be considered.
9. Evelyn M. Alexander Memorial Scholarship: 1 @ $7,500
This scholarship is for a Redwood High School student based on financial need. Recipient must have been accepted to a four-year college or university and must have achieved a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Extra-curricular activities will be reviewed.
10. Marguerite R. Sheklian Memorial Scholarship: 1 @ $500
This scholarship is in honor of former Visalia Unified teacher and assistant principal Marguerite Sheklian. The scholarship is for a Visalia Unified student with at least a 3.5 GPA who is pursuing a career in education and has been active in school, church and community activities.
11. Visalia Education Foundation Alternative Education Scholarship: 2 @ $500
This scholarship is for an accomplished student enrolled in a Visalia Unified School District Alternative Education program and who has been active in community service. Grade point average must be at least a 3.2.
12. Libby Romani Memorial Scholarship: 1 @ $2,000
This scholarship is in honor of former Visalia Unified music teacher and Music Coordinator Libby Romani. The scholarship is intended for a student who has been actively participating in VUSD music programs and will be attending college in the fall of 2018 with the intent of becoming a music educator or obtaining a Major in Music.
13. * Cal Rossi Memorial Scholarship:1 @ $3,000
This scholarship is for a Mt. Whitney student with a 3.0 GPA. Student must show activity in interscholastic athletics and be enrolled in an U.S. college full-time. Application/Essay must contain personal background, financial need, work experience/community service and anticipated goals of college study.
14. *Julie Reed Memorial Scholarship: 2 @ $250
This Memorial Scholarship is in honor of past Willow Glen PTA President, Julie Reed. The scholarship is geared toward a student who attended Willow Glen between grades 4 to 6. The student must have a 3.0 GPA or better, involved in various community service programs and active in student body activities.
15. * Hurley PTA Scholarship: 2 @ $500
For a graduating senior who attended Hurley Elementary for at least 4 full years. Must have a minimum 3.5 GPA and be enrolled in an accredited 2 or 4 year college for the upcoming Fall semester. Application/essay should incorporate Hurley Elementary background, PTA involvement, extra-curricular/community involvement and goals in college. Financial need is not a factor.
16. *Line Family Scholarship: 1 @ $1000
One scholarship will be awarded to an accomplished, deserving Mt. Whitney student. Not limited to a student with financial need. The Line Family will review these applications. Student must have a 3.5 grade point average or better.
17. *Laudine Oliphant Scholarship: 1 @ $250
For a community- active Mt. Whitney student with a 3.25 or better GPA who is involved in visual arts (painting) for at least 3 years of high school. Student must plan to continue their love for the arts at a two or four year college.
18. *Rhoda A. Barker Memorial Scholarship: 1 @ $1000
For an accomplished student who has been active in community service who has a 3.5 or better GPA. The student must be attending college full time in the fall of 2017.
19. *PEO Chapter HF Scholarship: 1 @ $1600
PEO is an international philanthropic education organization for women. The local chapter HF is offering this scholarship. The recipient must be a female graduate of a Visalia high school with a minimum of a 3.0 GPA. The scholarship is not based on financial need. Chapter members will review these applications.
20. *Ken Harris Memorial Scholarship: 1 @ $1,000
Ken Harris was a sixth grade teacher at Mountain View School for over 30 years. This scholarship is for a Mt. Whitney High School student with a 3.0 GPA or greater who will be attending an accredited college or vocational program. Need will be considered.
21. *Oak Grove PTA Scholarship: 2 @ $500
For a graduating senior who attended Oak Grove Elementary for at least 4 full years. Must have a minimum 3.5 GPA and be enrolled in an accredited 2 or 4 year college for the upcoming Fall semester. Application/essay should incorporate Oak Grove background, PTA involvement, extra-curricular/community involvement and goals in college. Financial need is not a factor.
22. * Jack in the Box Community Involvement Scholarship: 4 @ $1000
One student with financial need (family income less than $50,000 a year) from Redwood, El Diamante, Golden West, and Mt. Whitney. GPA 3.5 or higher. Must be enrolled in a four-year college full time for Fall 2018. Essay must include financial need, work experience/community service and college goals.
* Scholarships may be reviewed by the donating family/chapter.
